Filipino Martial Arts

Combat Arts of Negros

MARI teaches a program of Filipino Martial Arts which consist of a unique blend of the arts which our Guros have trained. This blend is designed to give the student a solid foundation in the Filipino fighting systems. Although MARI's Guros are licensed to teach and certify students in the systems they have trained, we have chosen to give a foundation that allows the student to branch into any number of systems as well as train individually with our Grandmasters. This allows the student to have similar experiences as their teachers and allows the student an opportunity to immerse themselves into the Filipino Culture and find out "Why things are done the way they are done".
A common misconception is that Filipino Martial Arts is just the "escrima sticks". This is far from the truth. Not only do Filipino Fighting Arts have the rattan baston as a training weapon, they also use a large variety of other natural materials as training instruments from the flexible tula-tula to the iron-like kamagong. In addition, there is a wide array of blade types used (as fighting arts of Southeast Asia are based on a "blade culture"). Weaponless fighting is also part of the Filipino fighting systems. Filipino Fighting Arts include a complete system of emty-hand fighting (mano y mano) from grappling/groundwork (dumog) to stand up grappling (dumog) and kickboxing (pukol-sipa)
